For the next 20 to 50 years nothing will, get real, oil is natural, cheap, available and excessive amounts of it out there. All you fools buying your Hybrid vehicles and saying solar, wind and such will maybe wake up. Because the fad will be gone in the future and what you bought into was B.S. but you will not admit it even when it hits you in the face.
You want to get rid of oil go live in a cave, burn wood (oops cannot do that, leaves smoke in the air, use horses opps cannot do that, who is going to pick up the poop) almost everything you have in your household, what you wear, eat, use, is related to oil and cheap energy in one way or another DO YOU WANT TO BECOME A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, using cow pies for heat and cooking? Go to Peru, Mexico, Chile, Ghana, Irag see how the masses live, they do not have a computer, tv, etc. etc.

I believe high tech diesel engines capable of utilizing both fossile and green fuel sources along with electric hybrid drive systems is the way to go.

I think hydrogen and atomic powered electric will be the energy sources of the future, but not for some time

If you are in Utah then hands down no question it will be Natural Gas. The reserves are enormous and the benefits are tremendous both in costs and environment. Read the articles out there and you will understand.

all of the above, plus other approaches. Perhaps, fewer people will choose to own cars (or be priced out of the ability to afford one).

If you've ever seen an extremely long-wire antenna such as those used by ham radio operators set up, you'll see there is a problem with the creation of electricity! There can be enough voltage created to light several (or more) neon lamps. Now, how to harness the power contained (considering the lack of amperage) effeciently...that's a problem. It's possible that a small antenna (like the standard AM-FM radio antenna on your car...errr...some cars now) can pick up and convert enough power from the atmosphere (or wherever) to power your car. Hard to tell...we MAY not have that technology yet or there may just be something else around the corner. It's what's exciting about living in today's world.

Something that would be insteresting, is a technology that thrived off of the current emissions.
Would basically run on "air", taking in carbon dioxide, Nitrus Oxide, etc other pollutants within the environment, and powering the vehicle off of "other vehicles" emissions :)
Though eventually the concept would "die out" when emissions become near -null- and the vehicle would have "nothing" to run itself off of.
In that case, it would require some sort of "backup" energy, solar panels hooked to the roof/hood/spoiler, hydrogen, maybe even "gasoline".....if one day, there were not "any" emissions to "work with".
Basically, a vehicle that worked as a vacuum cleaner :)

We certainly do not want anything to do with diesel. An increase in demand will only increase pump prices which are currently greater than the price of regular grade gas. Besides, who wants to sit in traffic smelling noxious diesel fumes.
With all of the many scientific discoveries and technology driven developments that have occurred during the past number of decades, one should be able to reasonably assume that a whole host of alternative energy technologies would have been developed. Here we are, nearly a decade into the 21st century. Solar power is maligned as being inefficient, hydro-electric power is deemed destructive to the environment, and wind power supposedly imperils birds. Does anybody believe in this oil industry propaganda?
Technology driven invention is the only manner to sever our addiction to the energy products we have been deceived into believing are the most cost effective. We can emerge victorious over the global oil cartel during this century by severing the strangle hold which these thieves and scoundrels presently enjoy. The propagandic voices of the global oil cartel would thus be silenced.

Europe is going diesel to clean up their air. The latest hi efficiency diesels are the clesanest burning engines in existence today. When i take my diesel truck in for a clean air inspection, i just pay the fee. They do not measure the exhaust as there is nothing to measure {no CO2} The next best would be diesel electric. The gasoline engine is the worst polluter in the world. Unfortunatley the oil industry is still the power driving the world economy.

Lots of people selecting hydrogen fuel cell, and making comments to the effect of "sticking it to big oil". Apparently they are unaware hydrogen is primarily derived from methane - a hydrocarbon. And that producing it creates more pollution (CO and CO2), while providing less energy and range than simply burning the methane. Doesn't exactly stick it to big oil to use more of a hydrocarbon by inefficiently turning it into H2.

Gas-electric or diesel-electric hybrid. I'll stick some solar panels on my roof when they make a plug-in hybrid or pure electric plug-in vehicle.

Don't know about the electric/hybrids. Even though they are in the "main stream" now (as opposed to the other vehicle types) - never know, the other technologies may catch up.
Plug in vehicles, and hybrids are going to require a lot of work to be efficient, bigger, and more efficient batteries. I know it would be cool to see plug in outlets all over the streets and shit to plug the electric cars in, but that energy costs money to create too.....so either way it's not "free electricity", I'm thinking like a parking meter type thing....

I think that the electric car will be the best way to go. I mean, we have solar power and wind power. Why not use that technology in our cars?

None of the above. None of these alternative technologies is ready for prime time and it doesn't look as though they will be any time soon. My bet is on very substantial improvements to the conventional gasoline engine.

Plug-in electric only if we convert to nuclear power generation. Otherwise you'll just have to burn more coal to generate more electricity...not gainin much there; hybrids in the interim.

I voted for gas/electric hybrid because people and government are stubbornly resistance to change. Oil will be around for a long, long time, not just for fuel, but for the many other commodities that use petroleum products. It will take decades to replace gasoline and diesel as a fuel; it will never go away completely for manufacturing.
The trend is to build hybrids *not* for their better fuel efficiency, but for increased power. We are a nation that loves muscle cars, big trucks, and commuting.
Biodiesel is a good idea, but no serious infrastructure is being built for it. Ethanol (cellulosic, not corn) is a possibility when oil prices go over $400 per barrel. Electric is worthless without better batteries and the technology still has another 10-15 years to catch up. Hydrogen is a non-event right now and will be until safe, compact storage methods and generation capability make it out of the purely research phase.
Personally, I would love to see hydrogen fuel cells replace internal combustion engines, but that will take lots of time, money, and an industry capable of supporting the life cycle of the technology. We're only at the foot of that mountain. We'd need another John F Kennedy to make it happen sooner.

In his second STATE OF THE UNION address, president George W. Bush said that we will be moving from a gasolene economy to a hydrogen economy. That probably will happen when the world supply of gasolene runs low. Electricity and water are produced when oxygen is mixed with hydrogen. The electricity may be used to power electric vehicles, homes, factories, etc. Electric vehicles are already being built. If batteries are replaced by hydrogen, then the hydrogen economy will be under way.
